Grant Awarded to Capital Area Intermediate Unit and Foundation, September 2008 - Monday, November 10, 2008

In September of 2008 the Capital Area Intermediate Unit #15 applied for and received a $45,000 SPECIAL EDUCATION PERFORMANCE GRANT, Transition from School to Community-Based Employment for Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder. The project, "Using Virtual Coaching® to Support Employment for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder" will be used for further refinement, development and testing of the actual device, software and training systems while capitalizing on the knowledge and understanding the IU has gained with regard to the needs and requirements of comprehensive transition planning that leads to successful post-school employment outcomes.

Updating of TSF's Job Coach Manual with information from CAIU 15's research will begin fall of 2008. Testing which will assess WERCware’s delivery of remotely provided job coaching to CAIU-selected ASD students in a simulated workplace environment will be conducted in the first quarter of 2009.

 

Grant Awarded to Messiah College and Foundation - Wednesday, May 07, 2008

HARRISBURG, PA - The Innovation Transfer Network (ITN), a partnership among 13 institutions of higher education in Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster and Lebanon counties, provides business assistance, technology assessment, and this year a total of $127,000 in seed funding for technology transfer activities. Specifically, the seed grants provide up to $10,000 to educational institutions to encourage further development of projects that are close to commercialization.

SymBionyx Foundation will work with Messiah College's Collaboratory, a grant recipient , to research and develop the application of “Prototype Development of a Wireless Enabled Remote Co-presence (WERC device) for those with Cognitive and Behavioral Disabilities.”

The SymBionyx Foundation is concerned with ensuring the access of higher functioning adolescents and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders and their families with informed and sympathetic but realistic assessment of the degree of self-supported independent living to which each can confidently aspire, and then access to the empowering resources and services required for each to reach and sustain that full potential.

·         Participants will be able to state several of the false beliefs presented that inhibit success in higher education for students with ASD’s.
 
·         Participants will be able to state proactive services, accommodations and modifications that increase the likelihood that students with ASD’s attending college will succeed in learning and community.
 
·         Participants will state proactive strategies that increase the likelihood that students with ASD’s will secure and maintain employment after leaving college.

      Dr. Nancy J. Patrick is an Associate Professor of Special Education at Messiah College. She is a certified school psychologist, licensed psychologist, special educator, author, speaker, and parent of a child with an autism spectrum disorder. She has worked with students on the autism spectrum for twenty years, has written training programs for parents and professionals and has authored several books on autism spectrum disorders. Her two most recent books are Social Skills for Teenagers and Adults with Asperger Syndrome: A Practical Guide to Day-to-day Life (2008) and Hints and Tips for Helping Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders: Useful Strategies for Home, School, and the Community (Release November, 2008).
Kathryn Siconolfi is a senior public relations major and political science minor at Messiah College in Grantham, Pennsylvania. She is currently considering a career in public relations, public service or law. Kati will share from her personal experiences, the challenges and rewards of attending college with a Nonverbal Learning Disability.
Steven Collier is a junior year at Messiah College in Grantham, Pennsylvania. Officially, he is currently undeclared. However, unofficially he is a story-telling major, with a minor in polymath studies. He will speak about his struggles in the academic world, as an ASD diagnosed student. He will also focus specifically upon his difficulties coping with General Anxiety Disorder.
